Mini Review: After Ever After (Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie #2), A Prayer for Owen Meany, Fat Kid Rules the World

Title: After Ever After (Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie #2)
Author: Jordan Sonnenblick
Pages: 272
Publication: February 1, 2010
Publisher: Sholastic, Inc.
Summary taken from goodreads:
An amazing sequel to the groundbreaking debut, DRUMS, GIRLS & DANGEROUS PIE.Jeffrey isn't a little boy with cancer anymore. He's a teen who's in remission, but life still feels fragile. The aftereffects of treatment have left Jeffrey with an inability to be a great student or to walk without limping. His parents still worry about him. His older brother, Steven, lost it and took off to Africa to be in a drumming circle and "find himself." Jeffrey has a little soul searching to do, too, which begins with his escalating anger at Steven, an old friend who is keeping something secret, and a girl who is way out of his league but who thinks he's cute.
5 STARS - IT WAS AMAZING

MY REVIEW:

A great sequel to an amazing book. Luckily for me, I only cried a few times while reading this book. :P

Title: A Prayer for Owen Meany
Author: John Irving
Pages: 617
Publication: April 14, 1990
Publisher: Random House
Summary taken from goodreads:
Owen Meany, the only child of a New Hampshire granite quarrier, believes he is God's instrument; he is.
This is John Irving's most comic novel, yet Owen Meany is Mr. Irving's most heartbreaking character.
3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

Because of Owen Meany, I will always think of penguins whenever I think of nuns.

But seriously, the book was not what I had expected. It was hilarious at times, which I appreciated since it was such a long book, but what I really liked was the fact that everything was nicely tied up in the end. Sure, there are some things that you'll still question after you finish reading the book, but that was the point. The book was supposed to make you question certain themes.

Title: Fat Kid Rules the World
Author: K.L. Going
Pages: 192
Publication: November 18, 2004
Publisher: Speak
Summary taken from goodreads:
Troy Billings is seventeen, 296 pounds, friendless, utterly miserable, and about to step off a New York subway platform in front of an oncoming train. Until he meets Curt MacCrae, an emaciated, semi-homeless, high school dropout guitar genius, the stuff of which Lower East Side punk rock legends are made. Never mind that Troy's dad thinks Curt's a drug addict and Troy's brother thinks Troy's the biggest (literally) loser in Manhattan. Soon, Curt has recruited Troy as his new drummer, even though Troy can't play the drums. Together, Curt and Troy will change the world of punk, and Troy's own life, forever.
2.5 STARS - I LIKED IT ENOUGH

MY REVIEW:

I really didn't like Troy in the beginning; I guess that's what made his character growth so great in the end. Actually, I think I would have liked to read more about Curt; he was an enigma.

  1. Hmm, I have the Fat Kid novel on my bookshelf but haven't yet read it. I'm most curious about that John Irving novel. Thanks for turning us all onto these.
