Mini Reviews: The Villain’s Younger Sister, I Help the Richest Man Spend Money to Prevent Disasters, After Brushing Face At The Apocalypse’s Boss For 363 Days, Seeking Good Temptation

Title:
The Villain’s Younger Sister
Author: Zhuge Jin
Chapters: 44 chapters
Publication: 2019
Summary from Novel Updates:

Nie AnAn woke up one day and realized that she had transmigrated as the villain’s adoptive sister.

In the novel, the villain conquered left and right, and his always woe-is-me younger sister was always cleaning up after him. The two of them were rightfully the grim reapers in the book.

The very next day after her transmigration, the soft and delicious Nie AnAn passed out from seeing blood.

And so —

The shivering competitors noticed that their nemesis’s sister had turned to a delicious treat — and wanted to protect her;

The original male lead noticed that young Miss Nie, who had been chasing after him this entire time, wouldn’t even give him the time of day anymore — and felt unbalanced;

Young Master Nie was very happy that his parents had two kids back then– she was so cute;

A certain cold blooded and violent villain had been going home earlier and earlier, and the way he talked was becoming gentler and gentler.

Villain Brother: AnAn, come over. Let me try some of it.

Nie AnAn: Hold on, gege. It’s not ready yet.

2.5 STARS - IT WAS OKAY

MY REVIEW:

This book was okay. It wasn't remarkable, but it wasn't terrible. It's been a few months since I read this book, but I don't remember much other than the summary.

Nie AnAn was basically a Mary Sue who conquered people through their stomachs. Her adoptive brother was a typical male lead who was cold and arrogant but only nice towards her. Surprisingly, it wasn't super dramatic and didn't have a lot of face slapping incidents like I thought it would since it had the missing children of wealthy families trope and such. That's probably because it's a short book.

I'd read this book if you're in the mood for something short but sweet. Unfortunately, I didn't like the last chapter about the other side couple. I feel like it came out of nowhere, and I didn't like the way he went about things. This is from the same author of The CEO’s Villainess Childhood Friend, which has a slightly similar transmigration plot, but I liked it better.

————-

Ye Zhi’s old fiancé thought that she, who had been rejected, must have suffered a lot until one day, when he saw he walking in the street, followed by a Lamborghini.

Wait ! Who is that man standing next to her ?

This man is a super-rich man — Hundreds of times richer than his own family!

2 STARS - IT WAS OKAY

MY REVIEW:

Ye Zhi is your stereotypical beautiful Mary Sue with a complicated family background, and Gu Ran is your stereotypical cold but handsome, rich male lead. The author likes to talk about how beautiful their eyes and hands are at least every fifth paragraph, which gets boring after the first few chapters. The villains are obvious and two-dimensional. There's not much conflict, which is nice if you're looking for a quick read, easy read.

Title:
After Brushing Face At The Apocalypse’s Boss For 363 Days
Author: Da Yuan Zi
Chapters: 97 chapters + 1 extra
Publication: 2015
Summary from Novel Updates:

In the most popular 3D keyboard online game “Tomorrow”, an ordinary player, Zhang Zhiyin has a less common hobby–that is to visit Dr. Y, the ultimate boss – giving him gifts and hugs.

As a game produced NPC, the other side naturally has no response, but Zhang Zhiyin still insisted on visiting him rain or shine for 363 days. Until one day he decided to give up the game, the result was being hit by a car.

Since then, he has been dreaming every night in which he will cross into the realistic world of ‘Tomorrow’ and return to the magical journey of normal life during the day.

****

“From the moment he fell in love with this person, he had chosen insanity.”

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

This was a surprisingly cute story considering it's an unusual combination of genres. There's online gaming, zombie apocalypse, and transmigration. Throw in cute pet and hilarious transformations, and you've got a mix of fluff, action, adventure, gore, and romance. Then you have a main character who decisively fell in love with the big boss in the game and a bunch of misunderstandings in the beginning lol. All in all, a fun read.

Zhang Zhiyin's decision to fall in love with an AI was a unique point that I really liked. He has his reasons for choosing an algorithm over humans, and it shows how much his past shaped him to this day.

I think this was my first zombie apocalypse story, and I really enjoyed it. I'm definitely interested in reading more of this genre now.

Title:
Seeking Good Temptation
Author: 顾楚
Chapters: 95 chapters + 1 extra
Publication: 2019
Summary from Novel Updates:

When Bai Xun was bored, she played a dating game recommended by a friend. She entered the game and must keep up the affection with seven different types of men as the only way to clear the game. Only when she gets seven hearts safely can she go home? After many deaths, Bai Xun knew it, and could only live by paying closer attention!! This game is also known as “Jianzhen Handbook”, “My Seven Boyfriends”, “I was Careless in a Shura Field”! Green tea bit*h is in a fragrant garden, and the white lotus is a b*tch!

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

This is actually the first reverse harem novel I read where the main character actually has to work on getting all of her capture targets to fall for her. Usually, the capture targets naturally fall for the main character's Mary Sue charms in these types of books lol. That, or the characters go off script and only a few people fall for the main character.

Instead, this book's main character has failed 999 times to get all seven capture targets to love her without any of them blackening and ruining the storyline. Because of her many failures, she's now a great actress and a manipulative schemer working on getting everyone's favorability meters up. She knows the capture targets' thoughts and emotions so well that she can predict their actions.

For her 1000th attempt, she decided to try the white lotus route, and it's hilarious reading her inner thoughts compared to what she says aloud. She's always cursing them out and roasting them lmao. The extra chapter was pretty interesting.

If you haven't read reverse harem or otome game novels before, the terms may be confusing at first, but the translations are really good at explaining everything.

Webnovel Review: Transmigrated Into a Big Boss to Snatch Away the Cannon Fodder by I Had a Dream Once

Title: Transmigrated Into a Big Boss to Snatch Away the Cannon Fodder
Author: I Had A Dream Once
Chapters: 155 chapters + 19 extras
Publication: 2019
Summary from Novel Updates:
Rong Qing transmigrated into the role of a big boss inside a book. Passionate, rich, and extremely good looking. Yet this kind of big boss character, there were a total of six in the original book. All were embraced and hugged left and right by the original book’s main character Xiao Ziqi. How can this be in accordance with the values of an upright modern society? Rong Qing immediately sharpened his (metaphoric) sword and prepared to battle against the other big bosses. He will let them learn that although love was precious, making money is even sweeter! During this process, he also accidentally picked up a little wolf pup cannon fodder from the original book and started his sweet, yet hilarious new life…
5 STARS - I LOVED IT

MY REVIEW:

I love Rong Qing's character. He's so refreshing to read lol. This guy is so confident and gay. He knows what he wants, which is to earn money and be happy. His happiness is earning money, spending his money, flaunting his wealth, and enjoying eye candy lmao. You'd think such an arrogant character would be annoying to read, but his childish thoughts further highlights his hilarious actions.

Lmao Rong Qing's internal monologue when he's embarrassed is freaking hilarious. I died from laughter multiple times because of it! He's so exaggerated and ashamed and dying inside while he tries to appear outwardly calm. And Lin Ji totally sees through him but doesn't expose him, which makes it even funnier.

His gossipy nature is hilarious, especially when he has to tone it down to maintain his big boss image in front of other people lmao. This big tsundere! Always saying one thing while internally shouting the opposite just to maintain his cold, aloof image lol.

I really love how most of the characters are gossipy at heart and are always trying to watch a good show. There's a lot of dogblood drama sprinkled throughout the book, but the best part is that the main characters are also spectators to the show. Instead of being a part of the drama, they're off to the side with the best view, commenting and eating melon seeds lol.

I appreciate how Lin Ji compliments Rong Qing's character. Because Lin Ji was a child actor and has been in the business for 10 years but didn't become popular because of multiple reasons, he's naturally cautious and perceptive of people around him. He's calm and steady as he slowly gets to know Rong Qing and learns how to read his tsundere ways. I always die laughing because Lin Ji usually witnesses Rong Qing's most embarrassing moments and has to quickly think of ways to get them both through the embarrassment lol.

Their romance is sweet and hilarious. The whole pursuing and being pursued aspect was cute but hilarious because Rong Qing keeps on acting calm when it happens but is dying from sweetness inside. He keeps on trying to show off that he's in a relationship, which was cute. What a tsundere lmao.

His poor CEO friends have it rough being Rong Qing's friend though lmao. He even made a group chat called Heartless Money Making Machines or something like that just to show off his wealth and power lol. However much his friends keep saying that they're going to leave the group, they never actually do. It's a solid but weird friend group lol.

Rong Corp's lawyer team and public relations department also need a shoutout. They're the most motivated employees I've ever read about lol.

The extra story about He Qian, Rong Qing's head assistant, and Sweet Pea (his cat) was not what I was expecting though. It was a bit out there but ultimately sweet.

OCT: Get Togethers, Wisdom Teeth Removal, Reconnecting w/ Family and Friends, & Power Outage

October was surprisingly spent catching up with lots of friends.

The first weekend of the month, Shelle's best friends came over for lunch. Shelle and I made some food, Tiet and her fiance brought Thai food, and Tawanda brought dessert from Sweet Hut. And Amanda accompanied us on FaceTime on Shelle's laptop since she lives in New Jersey now lol. Either way, it was way too much food. We ate so much and then watched a bunch of Kpop music videos reminiscing about all of the old groups we used to stan lol.

The next Thursday, I got all four of my wisdom teeth taken out. I chose the local anesthesia option where they stick a needle in my arm, so I didn't have any funny laughing gas stories lol. But man, the anesthesia knocked me out. One minute, I was awake and answering the nurse's questions, and the next second, I woke up with the lower half of my face numb and dripping blood and salvia lol. Luckily, Shelle was there to take me home and pick up all of my medication. I didn't know that you'd have to take so much pills for this type of surgery. -__-"

I was dying that first day because I could barely eat anything. I ate porridge and soup the first and second day and just about died from hunger the whole time. As soon as I used the bathroom, I swear I was hungry again! Everything just went right through me! Luckily, we were going down to visit the parents that weekend and mom made pho that night. Eating noodles was actually pretty easy to chew, so I ended up eating way too much noodles because I was starving lol. Mom also made chao thit bo, banh xeo, roast beef and mashed potatoes, and fish ball hotpot that weekend. I was in heaven and hell every time I ate lmao. Luckily, I had the good painkillers and mainly only suffered after the meals were over lol.

That following week, I ended up reconnecting with a couple of friends. Tyler messaged me on Instgram and was like, are you free to talk? So we video called each other and caught up since we hadn't seen each other in a year. I told him about my breakup and he told me about his new relationship lol. It was super ironic since the roles were finally reversed. Before, I would tell him about my relationship and he would be single, but now he finally found a girl that makes him crazy lol. It was really nice to catch up though. It made me realize that I really do need to reach out more.

The next day, Marc called me. He actually wanted to poach me to go work at his company lol. I turned him down, and we ended up catching up since we haven't seen each other since we graduated. We definitely need to hangout soon though!

The next weekend, we visited grandma and grandpa for the first time in almost two years. Last year, we were busy every weekend to see them. This year, we didn't want to visit in case of spreading Covid to them. But we wore our facemasks and visited and talked to grandma for a while. Lol their restaurant business is still thriving, which is good. Grandma said that she likes being busy or else she'd get sick just sitting around the house.

Afterwards, we met up with Megan for lunch at an Indian restaurant called Curry Me Up. Apparently, she watched a girl do a mukbang eating Curry Me Up and was interested to try it out. The food was really good! They also had outdoor seating, so we ate outside and caught up on all of the gossip lol. Now, we're trying to convince Megan to get cousin tattoos lmao. I'm still trying to sell her on gingko leaves lol.

The next week, we spontaneously made plans to have dinner at Archana's place on Friday night. She told us that she was going to cook dinner for us and to just bring our appetite lol. I got there first, and she told me how she planned on cooking but didn't have time for it, so she ordered Indian takeout and threw away all of the containers lmao. She wanted to lie to everyone and have them think that she actually cooked everything, but I told Jack and Ebony about her conspiracy not long after they came, so we were joking and complimenting her cooking the whole night lol. It wasn't until the end of the night that she came clean, and then Jack and Ebony also told her that they already knew about it, so it was double the surprise for everyone lol.

Next Thursday, we had bad hurricanes hit the night before, so we woke up to no power and internet. I had already taken that Thursday and Friday off because I had a dentist appointment and extra vacation time to use, so I didn't even know that there were any problems that morning! I was just chilling, laying in bed reading on my phone lol. I saw that the internet wasn't working, but I thought it was just a small issue since that happens sometimes, so I just turned on my phone's data and didn't think about anything special lol. It wasn't until Shelle came by my room and told me that the power's been out since 4 AM that I realized there was a problem. Some trees also fell over onto the road outside of our neighborhood, so it was also hard to leave the house that morning.

Shelle and Kyle were worried about the power outage while I was just chilling and reading on my phone lol. The power people said that power should be restored at noon, but they eventually updated and said that it'd come back some time at night, so we just spent the day trying to not open the fridge as much as possible and using our power banks. The fallen trees outside of the neighborhood were moved later in the afternoon, so we went out for dinner so we could have some power again. Luckily, the power came back on by the time we went back home.

However, because we weren't sure if we'd have power by that night and because Kyle really needed power and internet the next day for work, I had called Archana to see how her situation was. She had power but no internet, but she told us to just come over anyway and she'd make breakfast for us lol. So even though we got our power back, Shelle and I went to have breakfast with her the next day since we both had a day off while Kyle stayed home to work.

Lavit also came over for breakfast and we caught up, and he told us while Archana was in her room in a meeting about his and Dom's plan to have a surprise birthday party for Archana that Sunday, November 1st. He had already told her that he was taking her out for dinner for her birthday, so he invited us over to his apartment to surprise her with Dom. The original plan was to go to temple with her during the day (which was her only birthday wish) and then head to Lavit's place for dinner after.

However, Lavit told us to pretend to cancel our dinner plans with Archana and then show up at his place later to really surprise her, so we told her that we couldn't make it to dinner because we had already made plans to hangout with Megan later since she still doesn't have power at her house (lol this was actually true). Instead, we went to temple with her on Saturday instead. It was really cool going there. I guess because of Covid, but there wasn't a lot of people there, which was good.

The next day, Megan came over. Our internet stopped working again the night before, so we mainly just talked and ate lol. Shelle made ox-tail stew and Japanese napa hotpot, and we watched a couple episodes of the first season of the Fruits Basket reboot since we all read the manga back in high school and had the DVD. Then, we headed over to Lavit's new apartment and hungout with him and Dom. Some of Archana's friends who hungout with her earlier in the day also came over for the surprise.

Lol I really don't know what Lavit was thinking when he told Archana that he was taking her out to a restaurant when he already was planning on taking her to his apartment. We spent 20 minutes trying to think of an excuse for him to get her to come up to his apartment! We finally decided on him picking her up and realizing that he forgot his wallet, so they'd have to go back to his apartment. He argued that she was going to want to just wait in his car, so I told him that he'd have to tell her to just come up and see his new apartment since he just moved in eight days ago. Later, he told her that's exactly what happened lmao.

We made it a double surprise. First, we turned off all of the lights and only had Dom in the kitchen with the birthday balloons. Then, once Dom said I have another surprise for you, the rest of us hanging out in Lavit's room would bust out and surprise her again. Lol, when Dom first jumped out and said surprise, Archana screamed. Then, Lavit almost gave us away because he tried to open the door to his room, and Shelle had to quickly close it until Dom said the key words. Then she was shocked again to see all of us. She told us that she really was disappointed when we told her the other day that we couldn't come to dinner, so she was really happy to see us and to meet Megan as well lol.

All in all, a very good birthday surprise. We ate ramen and played Cards Against Humanity before calling it a night since we had work the next day lol.

October was a good month. :)

Mini Reviews: Lick Me, Like Me; Gosan no Heart; Ookami Papa wa Hitsuji Tsura Shite Yatte Kuru

Title:
Lick Me, Like Me
Author: R.erun & Riffle
Chapters: 71 chapters
Publication: 2018
Summary from Goodreads:
Jooin is a young vet that charms pets and owners alike at his animal clinic. When a puppy and kitten are dumped at his door, he decides to raise them as his own. With love and care the furballs quickly become full-grown ‒perhaps a bit too much as they’re now two… hunky humans?! When your pets are this eager, it takes being a ‘pet lover’ to a whole new level!

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

Based on the summary, I thought this was a love triangle or harem type of webtoon with both pets vying for their owner's attention. Well, it was kind of both? They're poly! I got too used to reading about love triangles that I completely forgot that there's another option: every gets together.  He gets with both of them, and of course, there are other guys interested in him as well. Half of the plot seemed to be about his pets being insecure about their relationship with him since so many guys were after him. I mean, it's understandable; they're in a new relationship and were also new to the human world and didn't know much about society.

I like Jooin's sister as well. She's got that overbearing noona vibe because she's used to taking care of Jooin since he was young and isn't afraid to admit that her own husband is weird lol. I would have liked to see her husband though to see their dynamic.

I like the extras as well. I'm glad that the panther gets some more screen time in the extras because he was an interesting character.

Title: Gosan no Heart
Author: Ogawa Chise
Pages: 154
Publication: 2012
Summary from Novel Updates:
"Why don't you date me?" And that's how Miki started going out with Udou, from next door's classroom, who was fighting with his ex-girlfriend. It was because of a whim, just a "game". But being with Udou, he started getting comfortable? During the sex, Udou took control of him with tricks, making him tremble in pleasure. Tender caresses, sweet passion? What happened to my body? Damn, I'm not like this. A traditional boyfriend, and a boy who likes to flirt. A story of pure and immoral love between high school students.

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

Look, I'm a sucker for fake relationships that turn into real ones, and the main story portrayed it beautifully. Miki starts to fake date Udou to get his clingy ex-girlfriend off of his back, but as they get to know each other more and have sex, Miki starts realizing his feelings and can't compute because he's a flirt lol.

The art's really nice, the boys are interesting, and the plot was well executed.

There's two other oneshots at the end, which were also hot and sweet.

Title: Ookami Papa wa Hitsuji Tsura Shite Yatte Kuru
Author: Kurusu Haiji
Pages: 178
Publication: 2016
Summary from Manga Updates:
Tatsumi vowed to never start a relationship with a dad. But, after meeting his junior colleague, Yuto (a sweet single dad), the idea of the three of them spending time together seems like something he might want. Tatsumi decides to break it off before he gets too attached. One night, he tries to hit on Yuto to drive him away, but it unexpectedly works!

3.5 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

This manga is about found families. It was heartwarming to see Tatsumi overcome his childhood trauma issues through interacting with Yuuto and his son.

I liked how straightforward Yuuto was, and how they actually communicated with each other to prevent unnecessary misunderstandings. However, his test near the beginning was a bit too extreme. Other than that, he's a great dad and partner.

But the real star was his son, Ritsu! He's so adorable and lovable! Any panel with Ritsu (and his new friend) was just so fluffy and sweet. There's also a spin-off sequel about Tatsumi's coworker, Yura, which is pretty cute but a little darker (Sensei wa Butchozura Shite Yatte Kuru by Kurusu Haiji). It also has a chapter about Ritsu and Kanata as high schoolers, which was super cute.

In honor of the fifth of November, Archana and I also watched V for Vendetta again and had our minds blown! Kpop Appreciation: NCT, Treasure, Chancellor, Super Junior, aespa

NCT 2020 had a comeback with two new members, and their album has a lot of bops! In addition to their title song, "Make a Wish (Birthday Song)", which is super catchy, I really liked NCT U's song, "Misfit".

This song has all of NCT's rappers, which made me realize how many rappers the group had in total lol. The song had a throwback vibe of early 2000 rap (I think), which I liked. I was also just so happy to see WayV members included because there's hardly any intersection between NCT and WayV since their in different countries.

I also really liked NCT U's "From Home", which had a Boyz II Men vibe. This song had a lot of NCT's main vocals and lead vocals in it, and it's so nice hearing their unique voices.

The song is sung in four different languages with some of the Chinese and Japanese members there, and they say "thank you" in multiple languages! Like yes! Take advantage of your multilingual members! And give Yuta more lines in general! That boy has such a beautiful voice!

Treasure has a new song called "Mmm" out! They're really been working hard this year. They've had a comeback every month, and this is their third comeback. This song is very different from their past title tracks. It's slower but sexier, which is hard to take seriously because I know that at least a third of them are still minors lol. But this time, they focused more on their choreography, which makes sense since they'll be using this song for the year end award shows in the following month.

Also, can we talk about Yoshi??? He looks so good! This is definitely his best look yet. And Asahi really looks like the protagonist in an anime lol. Mashi with short hair was a surprise. He looks less cute and more mature but still adorable lol. They all slimmed down again and look a lot more mature without the baby fat. But Doyoung has a headband again, so all is good in the world lol.

Chancellor made a remix of his song Automatic, which featured 4 artists. "Automic Remix", however, was ambitious enough to include over 20 popular KRnb singers on the track! I originally wondered why the song was 16 minutes long, but after I saw the artist list, I understood why lol. And I actually recognized at least a third of the artists like Jay Park, Lee Hi, Bibi, Jamie, Bumkey, and Hoody. It was a pleasant surprise to realize that I actually listened so many KRnb artists, and now I have a lot of other artists to look into because of this song.

Check it out! I'm sure you recognize at least one person in this remix lol.

Super Junior has a new song out called "The Melody". Compared to their typical hard hitting title songs, this song is softer and more sentimental. It reminds me of their softer B-side songs like "It's You". With lyrics like "We met with nothing in common / On the night we sang about eternity, not just about a moment / Do you remember the passionate voice? / This song only you and I know / The melody of the time that was our beginning", it makes me feel nostalgic as a longtime fan of Super Junior.

The video is full of clips of them throughout their career from practice rooms to concerts to their every day lives. It's so heartwarming and wistful. I love it. Also, the whistling part is super catchy. If I knew how to whistle, I would whistle that part all of the time lol.

SM's just debuted their new girl group, aespa. SM was really ambitious with this group, which marked their first foray into AR and SM Culture Universe (SMCU). Apparently the girls all have matching AR alternate identities called ae's as shown in their music video below, and I think all SM Artists will have eventually one, too. SMCU is similar to Marvel's Cinematic Universe in that most of SM's recent artists will interconnect somehow in their music videos and future content. This was already shown as Easter eggs in some of SM's music videos. For example, the flowers in the train scene was shown in another group's recent music video.

Anyway, I'm really digging aespa's debut song, "Black Mamba." It's powerful and catchy! I'm glad they didn't debut with a cutesy song, since I'm not a huge fan of that type of music. Plus, there's only four members, so it shouldn't be hard to get into this group.

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

This is a feel good, fluffy, slice of life novel, and for good reason! Azuza ended up dying from overworking and reincarnated as a witch in a new world. She decided to learn from her past mistake and made sure to live a more relaxing, fulfilling life from now on. It's just that she suddenly became famous, and with fame came a lot of problems and people. Luckily, she still sticks to her priorities and makes sure to not overwork herself or anyone else who comes into her life.

It's a quick and cute read if you want a relaxing slice of life book to break up all of the dramatic novels you read recently like I did lol. I just need to pick up the second book soon lol.

Title: I'm No Match For Him
Author: Toribun
Chapters: 60 chapters
Publication: 2016
Summary from Goodreads:
"Do you really understand what kind of place an all boy school is?" To scare this teacher away I pushed him down on the infirmary bed, but... how did I end up under him!?

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

The beginning was a little too extreme (who does that to a teacher just because he didn't get a reaction he wanted?), but it got better after that.

This is a teacher x student relationship. If that's not your thing, don't read it. If you remember that this is just fiction, it's a pretty good read.

The webtoon really shows Kasuki's growth as a person. He's impulsive and rude and doesn't like teachers at first, but through repeated interactions with Kenji, he starts opening up and becoming honest. They're actually pretty bad at communicating in the beginning, so it was nice to see how they slowly got better at talking to each other and apologizing for not listening and such.

Kenji doesn't really have much character growth, but I think it's because he's an easy going, go with the flow type of guy, so he not much bothers him except for when he accidentally hurts Kasuki's feelings. However, there are lots of incidents that shows just how serious he is about his relationship with Kasuki. Overall, this webtoon is a nice mix of fluff, romance, and smut lol.

Mini Reviews: Really, Really Miss You; The Icy Hero is Yearning for Love; The Bride Was a Boy

Title: Really, Really Miss You
Author: Mo Bao Fei Bao
Chapters: 53 chapters + epilogue
Publication: 2013
Summary from Novel Updates:
Our male and female lead are in the online entertainment circle, he on the dubbing side and she on the music cover side. The circle is one where physical appearance is generally anonymous and you are known by your online handle and your voice. Gu Sheng, a relatively unknown online singer who goes by the handle Sheng Sheng Man and who specializes in cover songs of ancient-style music, is a huge fan of Qiang Qing Ci, a very famous and well-loved CV (character voice) artist (i.e. dubber, voiceover artist). It was like, love at first listen.

One morning, she was chatting with a friend in her online “room” when his voice suddenly appeared in her headset, describing to her in detail how to prepare a food dish she had been talking about. This began their online chats about food. Gu Sheng can scarcely believe that she is talking to her idol, and he seems to be trying to progress the relationship further.
2.5 STARS - I LIKED IT ENOUGH

MY REVIEW:

When I read this book, I didn't know that this was written by the same author as Honey Stewed Squid, which I read earlier this year. It wasn't until I made that connection that I realized how similar the main characters were. They both are popular in their own niche areas, are shy, and get easily embarrassed. However, the main difference between them is that while Tong Nian chases her guy in Honey Stewed Squid, Gu Sheng is the one chased in this book. That's why if you like Honey Stewed Squid, you'll probably like this book.

Even though I understand her feelings, I still didn't really like how shy and passive Gu Sheng was with her idol. Like, it really took everyone around her to tease and push her to spend time with Qiang Qing Ci because she would be immobilized with embarrassment every time.

However, I liked how all of their friends tease them about their relationship throughout the book because it was pretty amusing and realistic.

I tried to read Easily Set Aflame a while ago but got bored of it after a while because I was tired of how passive and embarrassed the female lead was. I think this is a common theme with most of the author's books, which is why after reading one or two of her books is enough for me. However, if you like any of her books, you'll probably like this one as well.

Title: The Icy Hero is Yearning for Love
Author: Momose Wasabi
Chapters: 13 chapters + 7 extras
Publication: 2019
Summary from Novel Updates:
The tavern owner’s son, Ilya, often experienced the same dream. A dream in which he played in the village orphanage with his childhood friend, a boy whose appearance resembled an angel’s. A dream where he made soap with olives and soup with leftover vegetables. But the moment Ilya laid eyes on the picture of the “Icy Hero,” he realized that those dreams weren’t dreams at all; rather those were the memories of his past life. Most importantly, that “Icy Hero,” Riley, wasn’t angelic anymore?!

3.5 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

I started reading this book because I was looking for a short book to read so that I could finish it quickly and not be distracted reading it during the work week, so I didn't have much expectations when I started reading it. Plus, it's been a while since I read a Japanese novel, so I knew the writing style would be different from the Chinese novels I've read lately.

The writing style really fit the book's tone. It's mainly from Ilya's POV, which was pure and sincere. It made the angst even more painful. I wasn't expecting the angst (the summary did not prepare me!), but it gave the characters more dimension and really emphasized the long lasting impact of consequences and guilt.

Overall, I highly recommend this book if you're looking for something quick but impactful.

Title: The Bride Was a Boy
Author: Chii
Pages: 158
Publication: 2018
Summary from Goodreads:

The heartwarming transgender love story, based on true events!

Drawn in the style of diary comics with an upbeat, adorable flair, this is a charming tale about Chii, a woman assigned male at birth. Her story starts with her childhood and follows the ups and downs of exploring her sexuality, gender, and transition--as well as falling in love with a man who’s head over heels for her. Now they want to get married, so Chii’s about to embark on a new adventure: becoming a bride!

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

This was a really cute, autobiographical book about a trans girl's life story from her childhood to her marriage. The art style is really cute, Chii's really cute, her husband's cute...everyone's cute! It was so fluffy and soft and informational that I was just very happy that she was happy by the time I finished the book.

I think life is already hard as it is; you already know that being trans (or any gender identity or sexuality different from cis het) is difficult. Instead of focusing on those negative points, Chii chose to focus on her self love and love from her family and husband to show that even though it's tough figuring things out and being different from society, you also have a place in it surrounded with people who love you just like any other person on Earth.

In between every chapter, she goes over a lot of informational, educational content like the harmful effects of certain diagnostic terms, sexual reassignment surgery, and how certain laws prevent people from getting married or a surgery.

All in all, it's a very cute, informational book. I highly recommend it!

SEPT: Home Alone, Going Away Lunch, Cleaning Off My Desk, Visit the Parents, Dentist Visit, Work Stress

September flew by. It was a busy month for me at work, which is probably why I don't remember much about the month lol.

I was actually home alone for Labor Day weekend since Shelle and Kyle went to their friend's jointed bachelor/bachelorette party at the beach that weekend. It's been a while since I was home by myself, and I quickly realized how quiet the house can get, so I started playing music everywhere lol.

I watched #Alive, the new Korean zombie movie on Netflix, which was so good. While most zombie movies are set up with a large environment traveling across large areas, #Alive does that opposite and is set in the main character's apartment where he stays home in isolation. I definitely recommend you watch it, especially because it really showed the anxiety, restlessness, and fear you felt when you first started quarantining at home.

I also started and almost finished watching Go Ahead, a Cdrama about found families and the people who try to use family as an excuse to be terrible people. I saw a couple of funny gifsets of the show on Tumblr and was interested once I recognized the two male leads. Then, I found the show with official subs on YouTube and figured it was time to watch it. I think I spent the majority of that Saturday marathoning the show lol. It's just so good, and you really feel for all of the characters. Li Jian Jian's dad is the absolute best and deserves the world. Meanwhile, Ling Xiao's mom is the most selfish, manipulative woman I've ever seen, and I wished she got a worse ending because she deserved it. Anyway, I highly recommend it lol.

Two weeks after Brian announced that he was leaving our team at work, Kait also announced that she was leaving. :( I mean, I don't blame her. She wasn't sure if she was going to be converted to full-time since we still had a hiring freeze, and another company reached out and recruited her. Ironically, it's down the street from our office, so we can still get lunch and see each other. But we had a going away lunch for her at Cinco's since there's outside seating. It was good to see the team since it's been over 6 months since we've all seen each other in person lol. It still sucked that Kait was leaving because that just left Anita and me in our instructional design team, which meant more responsibilities.

Our company also recently announced that in preparation for whenever we come back to the offices, we'd need to sign up to clean off our desks so that there's nothing but the essentials on the top of our desks. This is so that it'd be easier for the cleaners to clean our desks every week. We had to sign up for a specific date and time for our floors to make sure that we're maintaining social distancing, so our team signed up for a Thursday morning and afternoon so that we could see each other for lunch that day.

Ebony and I signed up for the morning session, so we met up with Erin there and cleaned off our desks while I attended a call on my phone lol. I also cleaned out my snack drawer, which had a lot of expired snacks and even a drink. -__-" We met up with Zach for Bezoria's at the mall because we all missed it since we've been working from home. Jack and Anita ended up not coming because they weren't feeling so good, but it was still good to catch up and eat familiar food that we didn't have to cook!

That weekend, we went down to visit the parents. Mom cooked up a feast as usual, and dad told us the funny story about how he ate an early dinner at five with mom the other week. He did some yard work afterwards and when he tried to go to bed later, he stayed awake until two because he was so hungry, so he made ramen and finally went to bed lol. That Saturday, mom made hotpot and we ate it early around five as well, so we joked about saving the soup and leftovers for 2AM like dad lol. Surprisingly, around midnight, we were still full, but you know, you can't say no to mom's cooking... so we ended up heating up the leftovers and putting a packet of ramen noodles in it after all. It was delicious. :D

The following Monday, I went to an oral surgery to get a wisdom teeth removal consultation because I've been putting it off long enough and my teeth were starting to hurt on and off more consistently lately. I had an x-ray done, and they said that they were going to need to take out all four teeth, and I was just like, take it out all at once. Why suffer two times when I can suffer once lmao. So I scheduled the surgery to take place in two weeks in October.

Post surgery me has to say that I just want to eat spicy food! Food doesn't taste the same when it's not spicy! Also, my lower jaw just aches all the time randomly. It's so weird.

Anyway, work got busy ever since Brian and Kait left. They both specialized in two different fields: Brian in video editing and Kait in LMS administration. Now that they're both gone, Anita and I need to do both, and it's so much. I've got an endless list of videos I need to edit and upload onto our LMS.

It doesn't help that I've been slacking off on the AVO series because everything else was urgent before it, but then Irene said that Carlos wanted weekly video updates from me to review the content, so I was stressed. Like, for one reason, the video recordings are 8+ hours long. Just trying to edit and render a video was causing my laptop to lag hardcore. The other reason was that I needed to pull a video out of my ass asap to show them that I did something. Dude, I got so stressed that my eye was twitching for a few days. It was not a fun time.

Anyway, I'm trying to allocate my time better so that I can get all of these videos published, but man, I hope we can hire someone already! There's too much to do, and I don't like this constant guilt I feel for not finishing all of my work even though I've been pulling overtime.

Lol the first half of September was nice and fun, and then the second half kicked my ass. I guess that's just how life is.

Webnovel Review: Fake Slackers by Mu Gua Huang

Author: Mu Gua Huang
Chapters: 112 chapters + 3 extras
Publication: 2018
Summary from Novel Updates:
After class placement were decided, the school’s two infamous ‘problem youth’ not only shared the same class, but the same desk.

They’re clearly good at studies, but pretend to be slackers. Fakers from head to toe who just keep walking farther down the path of their performance.

Hear on the grapevine about the two big brothers who always fight over the last place in class.

Basically, this is a serious comedy. About the little matters of growing up.

5 STARS - I LOVED IT

MY REVIEW:

This was a hilarious read. First of all, the premise! Two super geniuses (and also known as the school tyrants) are actually fighting for last place in their school and are seriously concerned that their boyfriend's not gonna pass high school with their abysmal grades. He Zhao's 0 point essay made him notorious throughout their grade lmao.

He Zhao was half of the entertainment himself. His shamelessness, friendly attitude, and perpetual smile made him likable and easy to get along with. He easily gets roped into any hijinks their class came up with and always dragged Old Xie along with him. And his over confidence either made you want to laugh or cry lmao. Whether he was showing off at sports or boasting about making at least a 20 on the exam, he certainly knew how to get your attention lol. Also, his terrible aesthetics and attempts at romance really killed me. However, I really liked his duality. When he wasn't smiling, when he was truly angry, you really saw the overbearing aura of a school tyrant and remembered that this guy wasn't someone you should mess with.

Meanwhile, Yu Xie looks cold and indifferent and radiates lone wolf vibes. He doesn't care about other people and is hot tempered and uses his fists to solve his problems. He treats words like gold but is A+ at provoking people lol. However, he slowly realizes through his interactions with his classmates that he's slowly changed, and you see that he's actually soft. Even though he has a cold demeanor and people assume he won't help out, he's secretly a tsundere and will tell you he won't do something but then immediately do it lol. Also, he's a tease, a straightforward tease that's always leaving He Zhao surprised lmao.

The romance was a great natural progression from enemies to deskmates to friends to lovers. There's no unnecessary drama, no random love rivals, and no waffling around. It's just two guys slowly realizing their feelings and acting on it. They gradual learn how to date at school, and their classmates slowly catch on because they're really not subtle lol. There's a bunch of ambiguous misunderstandings along the way, so their classmates already thought that they were dating already lmao.

Their classmates make up half of the atmosphere. They have so many antics and all have distinct personalities that rub off of each other and make every interaction either full of shame or hilarity. Like, one guy's nickname is Know-It-All because he's notorious for snooping outside of the faculty lounge for gossip that even the teachers know him lol. I love that after they get over their fears of the school tyrants in their class, they stand united against all odds whether they're against teachers or sports competitions.

Also, shoutout to Old San for being the real MVP. I loved how he accepted his students for who they are and genuinely worried about them and their mentalities as they went through exams and became third years. He's always capturing small candid moments of his class, and it's so sweet and heartfelt.

I really liked the whole vibe of the book. The writing is succinct like Yu Xie, but the dialogue and tone is full of hilarity and shamelessness like Ye Zhao. Unlike a lot of books I read recently where it was more passive and full of explanations and thinking, Fake Slackers was active, full of cursing, fighting, and straightforward action. The writing and the characters makes you keep on reading until late into the night. Anyway, this is a definite recommendation if you like rom coms or yaoi or slice of life.

If you want a hilarious, more visual (spoilerish) review, I highly recommend you check out @hz_xy's READ FAKE SLACKERS presentation because it is 100% accurate and funny lol.

Mini Reviews: This MC Is Kickass; Later, He Became a Royal Healer; Rebirth of a Movie Star

Author: Early Cloud
Chapters: 217
Publication: N/A
Summary from Novel Updates:
While creating her character, the game’s system randomly generated a “unique” name for her.

To avoid being recognized by her friends in reality, Shen Jingbin went for broke and made her in-game character look as ugly as possible, turning her into the ugliest character in the game.

But who would have thought that these days, even NPCs would judge her based on her looks! What should she do now?!

Thankfully, she had enough luck to overturn that. Hidden quests, amazing pets and top quality equipment were all lined up for her taking.

Even male gods were offering themselves up to her!

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

I wish the summary changed because it's a little misleading. The last line made me think that it was going to be about a Mary Sue character who had a bunch of god tier guys chasing after her, which made me hesitant to read this book at first. You know, sometimes you gotta be in the mood for reverse harems lol. Luckily, I was more interested the comedic aspects of her creating a super ugly character in the game lmao. Thankfully, it wasn't a boring reverse harem with a bunch of guys fighting over her and only had one male lead.

The bickering/bullying sibling relationship was also hilarious. Her brother's a super hot, super popular, flirty player in the game, and he was so ashamed to even admit that they were siblings at first because of how ugly she looked compared to all of the praise that he said about her behind her back before she joined the game lmao. This led to a bunch of misunderstandings at first because other players thought that he went crazy and went after an ugly hag! And even though he grumbles and complains about his sister, he's the first one to message her whenever she logs online to hangout and do quests together. He's secretly a siscon even though he won't admit it lol. I also loved how her brother, at first, was trying to help them get together, but after they got together, he kept on complaining about all of the PDA lmao.

In the end, Shen Jingbin is still a Mary Sue. Due to her incredible luck, she basically stumbles upon a bunch of cheats that helps her throughout the entire novel. Also, I'm not a huge gamer, but I've never heard of a game like this one with so many global hidden quests and secret schemes. However, if you're willing to overlook all of that and stay for the humor, action, and little bits of romance sprinkled throughout, you'll have a good time. :)

Author: 艳归康
Chapters: 140 chapters
Publication: 2018
Summary from Novel Updates:
You Liangxing would never open the speech function in game.

That was because his voice was…

Particularly! Kittenish!

But there was one day, he queued up with a teammate who had so much to say that they may as well explode. Vexed to the point of no return, he contributed a voice that was capable of splitting heaven and earth, “Don’t BB.”

The other party who was being scolded stilled. In the ensuing silence, he suddenly let out a long, relishing… moan.

You Liangxing: “…..”

Later —

He realised that the person was a great god,

Much later,

Without him realising,

He became the great god’s royal healer.

…. And also his boyfriend.

3.5 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

KK is the most shameless person I've ever read lmao. He constantly pushes You Liangxing's buttons with his shamelessness, it's incredible that he doesn't get beaten up more often lol. I love both leads' contrasts with their looks and personalities. You Liangxing's handsome and manly but has a delicate, feminine voice while KK is tall and beautiful but super lazy. You'd think they wouldn't get along, but they have the best teamwork when it comes to gaming.

Since KK's a popular streamer, and because they first met during one of his streams, his entire online audience constantly witnesses their great gameplay and hilarious interactions together. KK gains even more popularity because his audience want to witness their great online love story lmao, and it was hilarious seeing how his audience noticed all of these details and clues about their relationship lol.

You Liangxing's sister is also pretty hilarious. Even though she a big celebrity, she's a brocon who can't find a boyfriend because she loves her brother too much lmao. Actually, You Liangxing's whole family is pretty interesting.

I would definitely recommend this if you want to read something fun with hilarious characters and a mobile game that brings everyone together.

Author: J112233
Chapters: 61 chapters + 6 extras
Publication: 2016
Summary from Novel Updates:
In his previous life Bai Lang was a small star. He rejected his boss and s*upidly engaged in a relationship which he thought was true love.

He didn’t expect that he would get betrayed, die of a heart attack and trouble his boss to accompany him on his last journey.

After his rebirth, he decided to give up on true love. As for his boss… since he wants something then just let him have it.

So this little star after his rebirth collected his boss, and then it became a true love story with his boss.

In between there are good friends/love rivals/scum men in the mix. A sweet story with a happy ending.

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

I've seen this webnovel recommended multiple times, so I thought I'd give it a chance since it's also a pretty short read compared to some of the other novels I was reading lol.

There were a lot of explanations in the beginning, which got draggy at times. This was mainly to set up the background and explain how and why he ended up dying.

However, I really liked the characters and how they slowly fell for each other. Bai Long died from his lover's betrayal in his past life, so he decided to take a different route and enter a relationship with his boss instead. He went into that relationship with wide eyes, disillusioned by "true love" and just wanting to have an easy life compared to his past life. However, his boss's kid made them entangled even further, and they slowly grew feelings for each other.

His kid made everything even cuter. His bickering with his dad was hilarious, and I love all of the nicknames they had for each other. I really loved the extras which showed him later in the future with his love interest, which was also super cute.

There's also major revenge against the ex-lover because even in Bai Long's new life, he still tries to use him.

Overall, it's a pretty good book if you're into rebirth, found families, and slow burn revenge stories.
