Mini Reviews: Game Loading, After Transmigrating I Made The Antagonist Cry, Guardian (Bu Hui Xia Qi)

Title: Game Loading
Author: Long Qi
Chapters: 304 chapters + 5 extras
Publication: 2018
Summary from Novel Updates:

Xie Xi was someone with luck off the charts! The advantage was that any game could be easily cleared. The disadvantage was that all games were boring! Then one day, the words ‘Game loading’ appeared in front of his eyes and he began to clear real games!

The emperor of luck ran into a bottleneck in the first game.

Game Name: Love to the Left or Right

The vampire prince has invited you to a meal. Will you go?

Xie Xi: I won’t go.

Arrow through the heart. The vampire prince says you can’t leave him and takes your life.

After loading the file, Xie Xi changed the option: I will go.

The housekeeper has cut off your head because of love and hatred.

Xie Xi: ???

4 STARS - I REALLY LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

Xie Xi's journey from a young 19 year old with normal three views to an old hand at coaxing was too funny! The quasi-worlds' dog blood plots baptized him into a true scum shou lmao. I loved the progression of his initial surprise and confusion to each world to his eventual facepalming and helplessness as he had to coax his lover(s) in each world.

The ML was also hilarious as he worked hard (and failed) to make Xie Xi like him. Their interactions were always funny and full of dog food after they got together. I loved how the ML constantly (and shamelessly) blinded his single friends with dog food lol.

There were some parts that were draggy, but overall, this was an entertaining read.

Title: After Transmigrating I Made The Antagonist Cry
Author: 喬木裏
Chapters: 75 chapters + 3 extras
Publication: 2020
Summary from Novel Updates:

He transmigrated into this book with the mission to prevent the antagonist from ending up ‘blackened’ too early.

And became a cannon fodder that is supposed to abandon the antagonist and prostrate himself at the Protagonist Bottom’s feet.

To this, Liu Yu’an would like to say – To abandon a bossy CEO antagonist who likes him and is elegant and beautiful and can even shut down the world economy with one sentence, and go prostrate at the feet of the little idol, the Protagonist Bottom who doesn’t even like him?

The original person must have had his brain bonked silly.

Thank the gods he transmigrated instead.

Later, Liu Yu’an realises – that the elegance and distance is merely a shell the bossy CEO has put about himself. The bossy CEO without the shell is sensitive, lacks confidence and especially lacks a sense of security. He’s also… a crybaby.

As a member of the Virtual Worlds Management Centre, Liu Yu’an has been through dozens of different worlds already. He has been the emperor, the evil court minister, the Lord of all Demons, the Demonic Cultivator Overlord, the Ruler of the Ascended Realm, a teacher, a student, a doctor, a CEO, a general…

Though he never did expect to one day have to play the role of the characters he has been as an actor in another world.

Looking at the Internet, with all sorts of,

Commenter A: Aaaaah! Gege’s acting looks like the genuine Demon Lord himself.

Commenter B: Holy shit! An-ge tell us in all honesty were you a high school homeroom teacher before you debuted?!

Commenter C: I’m in love, seriously, is it too late for me to declare my fanhood allegiance now?!

Liu Yu’an is quite nonplussed, my, oh my, you all are too young, too young…

Yet, not even the experienced transmigrator that he was expected that, one day, he would apply to be allowed taking a book character back out to the real world.

2.5 STARS - I LIKED IT ENOUGH

MY REVIEW:

I didn't particularly like the writing style when the author described a situation (usually during the faceslapping moments) or described a future event that's supposed to come off ironic or funny. It came off as juvenile writing.

The book really just focuses on the romance and fluff. Even the faceslapping or plot points are quick or glossed over to focus on their relationship.

Read this if you want a quick, brain-rotting fluffy novel. No thoughts, just fluff.

MY REVIEW:

While the novel was interesting, the translator's comments interspersed throughout the chapters got annoying after a while. Luckily, they bolded those parts, so it was easy to skip over them.

Official English Translations!

So I was looking around Novel Updates thinking about reading Little Mushroom since it's been on my TBR list for a long time now, and I found out that it's licensed in English from Peach Flower House LLC! It's coming out in February 2022! You can check it out here

Anyway, the translation group already took down their chapters since they found out about the announcement, so I'll wait until February to read it and support the author. :)

The publisher already has a couple translated books out like In the Dark and Daybreak’s Euphony, which I've heard of but aren't really interested in. Not sure what other books they have coming out soon, but I'll definitely keep an eye out!

Then, while looking around the internet to see what other Chinese webnovels got licensed, I found out that Seven Seas is publishing all of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's novels! That means that I can own officially translated physical copies of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, and Heaven Official's Blessing! I'm so excited! I loved Scum Villian and the other two novels have been on my TBR list for a long time, but I really enjoyed watching their anime adaptation in the meantime lol. Anyway, you can preorder the first volume of all three books on Amazon here, which will come out on December 7th! :D

It's still too early that the covers haven't been finalized yet lol.

Mini Reviews: Mr. Melancholy Wants to Live a Peaceful Life, Who Dares Slander My Senior Brother, The Reborn Otaku’s Code of Practice for the Apocalypse

Title: Mr. Melancholy Wants to Live a Peaceful Life
Author: Cyan Wings
Chapters: 122 chapters + 3 extras
Publication: 2020
Summary from Novel Updates:

Yu Hua loses his job, and the weight of the household falls on the shoulders of his partner, You Zhengping.

His husband is a temporary employee at the subdistrict office, with a monthly salary of only 2500; this troubles Yu Hua exceedingly.

You Zhengping is secretly engaged in the work of protecting the world from Destroyers, with a rather liberal subsidy.

You Zhengping spends all day fretting: how can he tell Yu Hua that he has a few million in private savings without giving anything away?

Right up until the day that You Zhengping receives a notice that a power great enough to destroy the world has appeared in his home.

Worried that something will happen to Yu Hua, an ordinary person, You Zhengping hurries home with his team. Once through the door, he sees a peaceful home, Yu Hua wearing an apron, a lifted frying pan in his hand, and a fish, golden on both sides and its aroma wafting around, frying in the pan.

Seeing You Zhengping, Yu Hua puts the frying pan on the switched-off electric stove and wipes his hands on his apron. “I wanted to save on the electricity bill.”

You Zhengping: …

The entire world’s most awesome Destroyer is his husband.

5 STARS - I LOVED IT

MY REVIEW:

Do not underestimate a man's level of pettiness! The amount of hell Yu Hua raised over one (1) pair of pants was awe-inspiring and dumbfoundedly hilarious lmao.

I also loved the author's notes at the end of most chapters. Too funny!

The comedy in here was pure gold. The difference people acted before and after knowing the truth, the more they dug their own graves before finding out the truth, the way they watched their life flash before their eyes after knowing the truth, the way they watched and tried to prevent other people from unknowingly digging their own graves, and the way people obliviously skirted death had me laughing my head off throughout the entire novel.

This was such a fun read. :) There's action, romance, sweet misunderstandings, and pure comedy to keep you entertained throughout with a different spin on transmigrators and systems.

Title: Who Dares Slander My Senior Brother
Author: 古玉闻香
Chapters: 88 chapters + 4 extras
Publication: 2015
Summary from Novel Updates:

Transmigrating into a novel one morning, Wen Jing arrived at the side of the one he worshiped and admired the most, becoming a loyal hound that was willing to go through fire and water for his senior brother.

Even the most arrogant cultivator said: “There is no one in this world who can enter my eyes, but only Jun YanZhi is truly noble.”

Wen Jing grew up alongside his senior brother, idolizing his senior brother beyond all means.

Unfortunately, he was ignorant, and as for this novel, he had only read half of it.

Midway through the storyline, he finally realized that things didn’t seem to be the way he thought they were.

Wen Jing: “Last night, Senior brother infiltrated Master’s abode. Master, please take heed.”

His master: “Nonsense! Your master was inside the abode all night last night, and did not see anyone else.”

Wen Jing: “Last night, Senior brother left on his own without permission to meet someone. Martial Uncle, please thoroughly investigate.”

His martial uncle: “Nonsense! Last night your senior brother and I were drinking and chatting merrily, all the way until morning.”

Wen Jing: “Last night, Senior brother was improper towards me……”

His senior sister: “Nonsense! How can your senior brother possibly do that kind of thing? Don’t tell me you’ve long held those kind of intentions towards him, and unable to obtain what you wanted, you’re now framing him?”

Many years later.

Wen Jing: “There’s this evil brute, specializing in using his top-notch, exquisite looks and elegant disposition to fool people, and everyone is in the midst of danger while not even aware of it themselves.”

Jun YanZhi: “If it wasn’t for you, that evil brute would most likely still be struggling in pain and suffering.”

3.5 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

After reading the title and description, I thought this would be a comedy BL cultivation novel similar to The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System and Every Day the Protagonist Wants to Capture Me

I was wrong. I was very wrong.

This book was more about angst and mystery due to all of the misunderstandings between main characters and what happened in the past.

However, if you like yandere, black-bellied male leads like The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System and Every Day the Protagonist Wants to Capture Me, you'll probably like this book.

Title: The Reborn Otaku’s Code of Practice for the Apocalypse

3.5 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

I think this is the first zombie apocalypse slice of life novel I've ever read. I really liked it!

The translator MTL the novel, so some parts were a little confusing, but overall, it was pretty entertaining reading about how Luo Xun and his team slowly but surely created a peaceful home environment during an apocalypse.

Because I'm used to reading zombie apocalyptic novels that's more focused on leveling up and constant action, this novel was a nice change of pace. Zombie evolution and politics on base affects them but only on the fringes instead of being the main focus like most books in this genre. This book focused more on farming and getting materials to support their base.

The ending was a little rushed and abrupt. I would have liked a few extras that talked more about the future.

Webnovel Review: Rebirth to Become the President’s Omega Wife by Hanmen Yatou

Title: Rebirth to Become the President’s Omega Wife
Author: Hanmen Yatou
Chapters: 87 chapters
Publication: 2019
Summary from Novel Updates:

Su Ling transmigrated into an ABO novel, and his imaginary male god Gu Liheng was the supporting cannon fodder of this novel.

In the novel, a cannon fodder shou sought refuge with Gu Liheng, using a favor gained previously to make Gu Liheng marry him. But after getting married, the cannon fodder shou went to pester the protagonist gong instead, framing the protagonist shou, causing Gu Liheng’s reputation to be damaged, resulting in his death in the end.

Su Ling decided to take Gu Liheng down before he gets forced into marriage by that cannon fodder shou!

Su Ling’s body fell softly on Gu Liheng.

“President Gu, let me smell your pheromones, I feel uncomfortable QAQ”

Gu Liheng handed him an inhibitor.

Su Ling gave Gu Liheng roses every day for a whole week.

“President Gu, I love you, can you marry me?”

Gu Liheng: “No.”

Su Ling: “…” Eff this.

Gotten tired of chasing people around, Su Ling decided to give himself a few days off.

The first day

Su Ling didn’t show up. Gu Liheng: “…”

The second day.

Gu Liheng: [Looking Out Of The Window]

The third day.

Gu Liheng knocked on Su Ling’s door and said: “Why don’t you come over anymore?”

2.5 STARS - I LIKED IT ENOUGH

MY REVIEW:

This was a sweet, fluffy ABO novel that although has an interstellar setting, focuses more on a new concept called spirit plants.

I guess it's because I've gotten used to reading a lot of dog blood revenge books recently that I kept on expecting there to be more drama. Instead, everything's neatly solved pretty quickly behind the scenes, mainly with the help of the spirit plants.

I liked how Su Lang was the proactive one in their relationship always chasing and how the alpha had a legitimate reason for rejecting his pursuit. However, Gu Liheng actively tried to solve his issues before getting together with Su Lang and was 100% a gentlemen and soft for him even before they got together.

I appreciated how nontoxic this book was. Most ABO books have a lot of dub con moments and uber-possessive alphas and overly submissive omegas, but this book treated everyone as humans and no one was taken advantage of due to their gender.

Overall, this was a cute slice of life ABO novel, which was a direct refresher compared to Heroic Death System that I finished reading beforehand.

JULY: Parents Visit, Catching Up W/ Friends, The Garden Room, Kidney Transplant Surprise

This month was full of pleasant surprises.

The first weekend of July was spent on that cabin trip with my friends. We came back Saturday afternoon, and my parents came up to visit the next day for Fourth of July weekend since we all had Monday off.

We went to eat dim sum at Canton House for lunch, and saw that it was still as busy as ever lol. I think we waited for around 30 minutes to get seated, and almost every cart that passed us was half empty.

Later that night, we sat outside on the porch to watch all of the fireworks around our neighborhood. Our neighbor had some fireworks and set them off pretty quickly. However, someone else in the neighborhood next to us had a bunch and set them off for a long time.

The weird thing was that someone kept on setting off fireworks every night for the next couple of days, too.

The next weekend, Carina and I drove over to see Alec's new house that he bought last year. Because of the pandemic, we hadn't seen each other in over a year, so it was really nice to grab lunch and catch up. And Alec's house is so nice! He's always had a lot of plants since his last apartment, so his house was really nice and green everywhere lol.

The next day, we went to The Garden Room for Shelle's birthday. It's a fancy restaurant that's Instagram famous for it's decoration, and you have to pay the $100 per person deposit when you make your reservation. It's so fancy that I had to wear a dress and makeup. Luckily, I already dressed up the week before for our  Fancy Schmancy on the cabin trip, so I wasn't too rusty with my makeup lol.

The food was really good, so I could see the appeal.

A couple of days later, my mom got a call from the hospital that said that she was one of four people eligible for a kidney transplant, so my family spent the next day waiting to hear the results. This was ironic because my dad was trying to convince her to go to Florida for a mini vacation a few days before that, and mom said she didn't want to because she didn't know if she'd hear back from the hospital about a kidney transplant. Then, a couple of days later, it actually happened!

Then, on Tuesday at 11PM, mom got a call to go to the Augusta hospital asap to prepare for the transplant! My dad drove three hours to get there at night, and they waited until noon the next day for my mom to get some tests done. By the time the staff notified my dad anything, mom already finished her surgery that night.

The next day, after Shelle and I finished our morning meetings, we drove three hours to the hospital. Dad took us to the ICU to see mom who had just woken up from all of the anesthesia and could barely talk because she was intubated until earlier that morning. We got dad lunch and checked into a nearby hotel and brought dad over so that he could shower since he had been staying in one of the family waiting rooms near the ICU this whole time. Then, we stayed at the hotel and worked all evening, which really sucked.

We stayed at The Partridge Inn Augusta, which used to be a mansion built in the 1800s. It was quite interesting since some of the hallways dipped down for a bit so there were stairs for those portions. Also, Augusta is so humid, even the hotel room was kind of damp.

The next day, we stayed at the hotel to work before grabbing lunch and going to visit mom at the hospital. She went out to do some x-rays for the next hour, so we actually didn't see her and so left to go back to work until the evening. Then, we took dad out to eat since he's just been eating hospital food whenever we weren't there. We tried to get him to come back to the hotel with us and sleep in a real bed since he's been sleeping in a two-seater couch in the waiting room this whole time, but he refused because he wanted to keep mom company.

The next day, I drove dad back down to Warner Robins so he could pick up more clothes and do some errands around the house. There was also a pile of mail that he had to go through. By the time we drove back to the hospital, it was already dinner time, so we had a quick dinner with Shelle at the nearby Subway before Shelle and I drove back home.

We drove back to the hospital to visit mom the next Friday after work. Because she knew that she'd have a lot of hospital visits after she got discharged, Shelle had found her and dad an extended stay hotel nearby, so they wanted us to stay there for that weekend to see its conditions. So we went to check in at the hotel first, and we chose the accessibility room since that's what mom wanted, but the room smelled like tobacco smoke as soon as we went in, so we changed rooms to a normal double bed room instead.

Shelle drove dad and Kyle back home the next morning so that he could do more errands around the house and the farm while I kept mom company at the hospital. Brian drove up with some friends to visit later in the day.

He only stayed for an hour because he and his friends were going to a friend's going away party in Atlanta after he visited mom. We all told him that he could just visit mom the next day so that he didn't have to do some much driving around and bringing all of his friends, but I think he just didn't want to drive by himself because he never does long trips by himself. Mom even told him not to bring his friends to the hospital because there's not much room for visitors, but he still dragged all three of them with him! He freaking said that they were going to do something else while he visited, but no, I had to take them to the waiting room so that they could settle down somewhere.

Anyway, Brian continues to prove that he's a disappointment in the family. No wonder mom and dad don't trust him with anything important. I found out last week that he didn't even know how to cook rice properly.

We were originally planning on going home after dad came back, but mom said that she might be discharged on Monday, so we stayed another day. Unfortunately, she had some complications, and her sodium levels were too low, so she had to stay and wait for another day. She actually wasn't discharged until Thursday, and we were already back home by then. Luckily, Shelle had already booked the hotel room for them and showed dad the directions, so they knew where to go after they left the hospital.

That Friday, Tawanda came over to visit, so she and Shelle picked up dinner at The Rotisserie Shop and drinks at Oolong Bubble Tea before coming back home. Shelle and I were really tired of eating out because that's all we did last weekend, but the shrimp and grits at The Rotisserie Shop was so good!

We stayed and kept mom company until the next day so that dad drove home and did more errands and drove back the next day. Mom can walk around by herself now, but she still needs help with anything bending over like getting on the bed. She's also a lot weaker now, so she sometimes needs help opening her medicine bottles. Man, she has to make so many pills with every meal and before bed, it's insane. Luckily, she feels better every day.

So yeah, it's been very busy these past few months. I'm incredibly happy and grateful that my mom was able to get a kidney transplant since she's been on the waitlist for the past two years and was estimated to get a transplant in seven years. Hopefully, everything will work out okay :)

Webnovel Review: Heroic Death System by Xue Yuan Specter

Title: Heroic Death System
Author: Xue Yuan Specter
Chapters: 274 chapters + 1 deleted chapter
Publication: 2016
Summary from Novel Updates:

“I curse you to never die in peace!”

Thus, Shang Ke started a never-ending cycle of constantly throwing away his miserable life.

He would always show himself as a martyr while letting others cry over his death.

It was because of a woman’s curse that Shang Ke was hit by a car and turned into a human vegetable. This led to him becoming bound by an unlucky system in which he was cursed to die. The most unfortunate part was that he never cheated on anyone’s feelings. The reason for why he was cursed by a woman was because of a guy named Qi Chen. Qi Chen was a ladies man, and he would always use Shang Ke as an excuse to break up with any woman that he was with. As a result, Shang Ke was always blamed for the breakups. Since then, the main character could only be forced to cross into different worlds. He would thus experience for himself, the hero’s “thrill”.

HE, 1v1

3 STARS - I LIKED IT

MY REVIEW:

I was originally interested in this because a lot of people said that you'd like Heroic Death System if you liked Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil. I can see the similarities since the main characters do a lot of counterattacks and white washing, there are a lot of unique arcs, and the male lead is the same person in every arc.

However, I really didn't like the some of the male lead's behavior in this book. It's one thing to be possessive of the person you like, but it's a completely different thing to rape the person you like just to stake your claim. It doesn't matter that your rapist is your lover from your previous transmigrations and you know it's because he loves you and can't f*cking communicate or think properly like a normal person. In some of the worlds, Shang Ki was still in the process of figuring out if he was his lover before he got raped! This is not okay.

I really did like Shang Ke's growth throughout the novel though. He had the most changes, and his relationship with his system was hilarious. His internal thoughts were always entertaining as he roasted his lover and every disadvantaged situation he was in.

There were a lot of unique arcs I had never read about before that I really liked such as the faith arc, the god arc, and the pen arc lol. Shang Ke's heroic deaths were pretty tragic, so be prepared for the feels in between all of the humor and action.

If you can get over the male lead's scummy behavior (even Shang Ke acknowledges it), I think this is a pretty good quick transmigration novel.
