Shows I'm Currently Watching: I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss; Chainsaw Man; Love in Contract; The Masked Singer; Haikyuu!! To the Top

Happy Halloween! I'm surprised people are trick-or-treating on a Monday night instead of this past weekend though.

Anyway, I haven't done one of these posts in a while! Thought I'd talk about the current shows I'm watching and some of the shows I recently finished watching. :)

CURRENTLY WATCHING:

I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss

The summary sounded really familiar to a manga series I read a year or two ago. I couldn't remember the title for the life of me, but I was pretty sure this was the same series, so of course I had to watch it and make sure I was right lol. And I was!

I really liked the manga, but it ended after 3 volumes, so there wasn't much content after the first arc. The manga is based on the light novel, but I couldn't find any completed translations at the time, so I left it at that. Luckily, after watching the first few episodes, I remembered the plot and knew that this was the same series I read a while ago! This is great news because now I can watch what happens next instead of searching for the light novel translations lol!

Anyway, the plot is great. I love how Aileen is working her hardest to change her fate and the fate of the game. The "protagonists" of the otome game are hella sus though. I really wonder if Lilia is also reborn or a transmigrator, or if that's just her naively trying to fix the world. Guess I'll find out in the upcoming episodes! But Prince Cedric is fucking disgusting and delusionally self-centered. Really hate him.

Chainsaw Man

I didn't know much about Chainsaw Man except for that the manga was super popular and that the covers made it look like the plot was super bloody and action-y. After watching the first episode, that's all I needed to know.

(You just need to know that Denji and Pochita are the most wholesome found family you can get, okay?! I didn't expect to have so many feelings in just the first episode!)

I can see why there was so much hype about this anime adaptation. The action, the characters, the cinematography, the music...everything was awesome! Also, saw that this was produced by Mappa and knew that the series was in good hands lol. Can't wait to see where this series goes. I'm sure I'll end up reading the manga after it's finished airing lol.

Love in Contract

I was interested in watching this because I saw a clip of the first episode on IG where Park Min Young was being an absolute boss speaking in English. First, I love Park Min Young. Second, I loved how all of the comments were about her putting her English lessons from her other role in What's Wrong with Secretary Kim into action lol.

Anyway, Shelle and I started watching it last week and have been invested in the male lead's mysteriousness. Obviously, the show is trying to depict him in an evil light, but he's the male lead, so I doubt it. However, I didn't expect to see the mom in Extraordinary Attorney Woo to also be in this drama! I really like her confident/arrogant persona.

The Masked Singer Season 3

Started watching this again because my parents came up to visit the other weekend. My dad likes watching the show, so this is one of the ways we bond whenever they visit lol. Every episode, I’m constantly reminded that I don’t know that many celebrities lol.

Haikyuu!! To the Top

Had to take a break watching season 4 because Alec and I went on vacation and caught Covid, but now that we’re better, we’ve started watching Haikyu again. I forgot how addicting the sets were!

We’re almost finished with the season! I know it won’t cover the entire arc, so I was excited for the next season. However, it looks like they’re compressing the rest of the series into two final movies. A bit sad since they’ll be skipping a lot of content. Guess I’ll need to read the manga after all lol.

FINISHED:

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III

I recently started reading the light novels again, so I reread volume 11 and found out that season 3 of the anime was based on this arc. Obviously, after I finished reading the arc, I had to watch it in anime form because the fight scenes described in the books were already exciting enough! I couldn't wait for the final showdown! And the anime didn't let me down! It was as thrilling as the books!

There were a couple of small differences from the book, but nothing drastic, so it was nice to know that they were sticking to the source material pretty well!

Skeleton Knight in Another World

I wasn’t expecting this anime to start off so graphically. It’s similar to Goblin Slayer in terms of dark themes and fantasy setting, but it’s more lighthearted in comparison since there’s a cute fox spirit around that looks suspiciously like a green Vulpix lol. It’s not a terrible anime, but it’s also not groundbreaking either. I’ve been watching this casually in between reading books and working out.

There's enough loose ends to have a second season, so I wouldn't mind watching the it if there is a second season.

Run-On

Started watching this a few weeks ago with Shelle when I came back home after recovering from Covid. She started it when I was in the middle of a webnovel, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the show and knew that I was addicted lol.

I really like the main character Mi Joo. She’s so articulate and understands herself so well. The male lead took a minute to like because I couldn’t understand him that well in the first episode. However, I appreciate that he’s not the typical tall, cold, and handsome male lead like in most Kdramas. He’s a legit weirdo and some stuff he says really can make people think he’s arrogant even though he doesn’t mean it.

The episodes are over an hour long, so that was surprising. So much happened in every episode! However, I was kind of disappointed with the ending, especially with the dad.

But the side couple was interesting. This was my first drama watching SooYoung acting, and I really like it!

SEPT: Korean Spa, Filipino Pop Ups, San Fran Trip, Covid, Recovery

September was a wild ride. If you’ve already read my San Fran Trip post, then you’ll already know just how busy last month was lol.

But first, Alec and I started off the month by choosing to have a relaxing weekend by going to Spa Land in the morning. It was Alec’s first time, so I was excited to share the experience with him. Since he loves the heat, he tried out all of the saunas and could, unsurprisingly, handle the temperature in all of them. We also ate brunch there and rested a bit before going shopping.

Alec needed to get some winter comforters, so we stopped by TJ Maxx and Marshalls to look for comforters, and I ended up buying some work clothes as well. Then, we went home and continued to be relaxed bums and watch anime lol.

The next weekend, there was a Filipino pop up featuring So Sarap, Kamayan, and a bakery. We wanted to try it since it’s hard to find Filipino skewers in GA and because Kamayan was opening its restaurant soon, so we wanted to try their entrees. We arrived an hour after opening, and man, the line was SO LONG.

We basically waited 2.5 hours in line in the occasional rain to get our food. It was crazy. Luckily, we didn’t arrive hungry, or else we’d be starving lol. We found out while in line that the holdup was because some people ordered like 80+ skewers, which was outrageous. But you know what, the food was amazing and worth the wait lol.

The next week, Carina and I drove over to Alec’s house after work on Tuesday because we were going to carpool to the airport the next morning. You can read our whole adventure here.

That night when we got home, Archana texted us that her boyfriend tested positive for Covid and that she was already showing symptoms, so to be on the lookout for anything. The next day, I was super tired, which I thought was normal because we definitely walked a lot during our trip and didn’t sleep much. I thought my body was making up for all of that missing sleep. But the next morning, I woke up with a sore throat.

Everything went downhill after that. We went to get a PCR test and were waiting for the results. In the meantime, Alec started feeling symptoms a day after me. We had coughs, congestion, phlegm, chills, weakness, and chills. Throughout the span of a few days. At one point, I was so cold that my fingers were going numb. They felt better after I ate dinner though lol. It just didn’t make sense.

Alec got his PCR results back as negative even though he definitely had symptoms, while I still didn’t get my results even though we took the test at the same time at CVS. In the meantime, we took two rapid tests to see if Alec was still negative and to see what my results were. Alec was still negative, but my tests almost immediately showed that I was positive, so we think Alec was just a day behind me on his results. Especially because he took another rapid test the next day and was finally positive lol. My PCR results came back later that night and said that I was positive. Surprise surprise lol.

Since we got the results, we knew that we would need to quarantine at Alec’s house. That meant that I needed to pick up some stuff from my house. I had to video call Shelle to show her where to get all of my stuff, and she gave us more medicine and food as well. They left everything on the front porch for us to have no contact.

After I had a nap and dinner, my chills finally went away, and I felt better, so we drove to my house. However, Alec started getting a fever while we were driving, so it was a quick trip to grab everything and go because he was feeling really bad that night. He ended up having a 101 degree fever. The symptoms really hit him hard after that. He had a fever for a few days and was coughing a lot.

Because I had a history of childhood asthma, I was eligible for Paxlovid, so I started taking those pills. It was like antibiotics. You had to take three pills in the morning and at night every day for five days straight. One of the side effects was that you could have an altered sense of taste. Some people will have a metallic taste. I didn’t think the side effects would be that bad when the doctor explained it to me. What a fucking lie.

I was about to vomit with how metallic and bitter the taste was in the beginning. It starts off at the back of your throat and slowly permeates your entire mouth with bitterness. It was so gross. I couldn’t even taste food for the first couple of bites because the bitter taste was so strong. Only cough drops and drinking ginger ale could suppress the taste for a while. I even woke up at 4am because of how bitter my mouth was. That was the most disgusting side effect I’ve ever had from taking medicine. I looked it up, and only 16% of people experience this side effect. I guess I was just lucky lmao.

However, I started feeling better after taking Paxlovid. I had significantly less coughs and phlegm. After I finished my medication, those were the only symptoms left. Because it was hard to have a conversation without coughing my lungs out, I didn’t come back into the office for a few weeks and worked remotely instead.

I also finally tested negative using a rapid test, while Alec was a day behind me and was positive until the next day. I think this was around 10 days after showing the first symptoms.

Anyway, at least Alec and I were finally able to go home at the end of the month and see Luna lol. So yeah, September was wild!

Webnovel Review: When an Alpha is Marked by One of His Own Kind

Title: When an Alpha is Marked by One of His Own Kind
Author: 早更鸟
Chapters: 100 chapters + 3 extras
Publication: 2020
Summary from Novel Updates:

Within the industry, everyone knew Team DG’s captain Lu Zhe and Team BLX’s top laner Shen Qiao didn’t get along. They said it was due to hormones. They said it was a basic AA incompatibility.

Lu Zhe once said of Shen Qiao: “Obsessed with kills. Lone wolf.”

With a cold smile, Shen Qiao said of Lu Zhe: “Command’s mediocre. Shitty jungler.”

But then…

When Team DG, champions of the last tournament season, stumbled during the Spring Tournament and fell during the semifinals, someone cut through the furious cursing and swearing that had consumed the internet and leaked the news—

Shen Qiao was going to be traded. He was joining Team DG.

When that news came out, the internet roared.

Did Shen Qiao and Lu Zhe fight today?

On esports forums, trolls and haters placed their bets. It was endless, until Team DG won its second world championship crown.

Half a month after the tournament.

The players of Team DG hosted a livestream: “The lodgings were awful. Captain and Qiaoqiao had to share a room. Aren’t we pitiful?”

Shen Qiao, sitting next to the monitor, glanced over through hooded eyes. He caught a glimpse of a bullet comment and echoed it out loud: “Did we fight?”

He lifted a hand to his neck. “We fought.”

Lu Zhe approached with a cup of black tea. Just in time to see Shen Qiao touch the bite mark on his throat. He added:

“We even broke the bed.”

2 STARS - IT WAS OKAY

MY REVIEW:

The writing could use some improvement. There was a lot of telling instead of showing, which was a shame for an esports novel. A lot of the matches were skimmed over. For the actual league matches, the writing didn't really heighten the tension of a championship match either. Then, the writing became mechanical about telling what the characters did in the game but showing none of the emotional tension between the team players. There wasn't much suspense or build up to get you hooked into the matches.

Also, the writing really bothered me in the beginning because the author kept on using metaphors to describe every. little. detail. about the main leads. It got so repetitive reading about how their eyes lit up like stars or how their voices slowed down to be sarcastic.

As for the couple, I think there could have been more backstory on how they actually got together and broke up instead of the little tidbits of info mentioned. I think doing so would have really made their reunion hurt more in hindsight.

This book had potential, but unfortunately, it fell through. You can find a better esports or ABO novel elsewhere.

Second San Francisco Trip!

Since Archana moved to SF earlier this year, I had promised to come visit her sometime soon, so Alec, Carina, and I made plans a few months ago to finally visit! This was Alec and Carina’s first time in SF, so they wanted to do a lot of things, and boy, did we make the most of our time. We ended each day worn out after walking miles everywhere lol.

Wednesday, September 14th:

  • Woke up early to catch our morning flight and arrived in SF around noon
  • Met up at Archana’s apartment and had a lovely homemade lunch
  • Since Archana had work, we walked to the Ferry Building and took lots of pictures of the coast
  • Because we already ate lunch, we bought drinks from different places within the Ferry Building
  • Then we walked another 25 minutes to Pier 39 and was overwhelmed by the amount of shops there
  • The pier behind all of the shops was the only quiet area lol
  • Walked around to find souvenirs for Carina’s family and ate some garlic fries as a snack
  • Then we walked to Ghirardelli Square to meet up with Archana for dinner before going to the Palace of Fine Arts to catch the sunset, but she called and said that she was still working and wouldn’t have enough time to meet us before sunset. Instead, we should get dinner and go without her.
  • So we grabbed dinner at Palette Tea House at Ghirardelli Square because their dim sum pics looked REALLY good. The food was great, but we definitely ordered too much lol.
  • Dinner ran a little late, so instead of rushing to the Palace of Fine Arts to catch the tail end of the sunset, we decided to go the next morning to catch the sunrise with Archana. Instead, we explored the rest of Ghirardelli Square before finally going back to Archana’s place to chill before bed.

Thursday, September 15th:

  • Woke up around 5:30 to get ready to head out for the sunrise at the Palace of Fine Arts. Archana even made us breakfast for a picnic there!
  • Walked around and explored the place as the sun rose and ate our breakfast with some pigeon companions lol
  • The last time I came to SF, we also explored the Palace of Fine Arts with one of my cousins near sunset. Catching the sunrise was a totally different experience. There was no one around in the morning except for a few dog walkers compared to the evening which was full of people. It was definitely a nice change and also felt really accomplished. Like, we woke up, had a walk, and had breakfast before 8am. We started off on a good note!
  • Archana left to go back to work, while we walked to Crissy Field East Beach and walked along the beach to take a bunch of pics of the Golden Gate Bridge in various stages of sunrise. At first, there was a lot of fog, but then the sun finally arrived and made everything brighter
  • Alec and I got excited looking at rocks near the waterline and ended up getting our shoes wet from the tide coming it too quickly, so we rested at the parking lot near the NOAA Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, which is near the end of the beach
  • Because we were pretty far out from civilization, it took a while for an Uber to pick us up lol
  • We then went to see the Full House House because Carina’s a big fan
  • Then, we walked to and hiked up Alamo Square to enjoy the view from above. Also inadvertently saw The Painted Ladies, a historical row of Victorian houses shown in a lot of postcards and movies.
  • When we were done exploring the place, we spent a lot of time trying to decide where to eat lunch. We eventually decided that we wanted to try new food that would be hard to find in GA, so we chose a Burmese placed Burma Superstar, which had a lot of great Google reviews
  • Wow, the food was so good! And the drinks, too! And the waiter lol
  • Then we walked to the Japanese Tea Garden and ended up buying the Gardens of Golden Gate Park Pass so that we could visit the other gardens (Conservatory of Flowers and San Francisco Botanical Garden) for the next three days with one pass. We planned on going to the Japanese Tea Garden and Botanical Garden for that day and maybe come back for the Conservatory of Flowers if we had time the next day
  • The Japanese Tea Garden was beautiful! Unfortunately, the pagoda was under construction and wasn’t available for viewing, but everything else was aesthetic af lol
  • The Botanical Garden was HUGE. There were so many different areas to explore. My favorite was Temperate Asia because of the bamboo pond
  • We had already made plans to grab dinner at Hayes Valley and watch the sunset at Mission Dolores Park with Archana, but she was still working and told us to grab dinner without her again and she would meet us at the park. Instead, we walked around Hayes Valley and weren’t really hungry, so we changed our plans to get hot chocolate from Archana’s favorite hot chocolate place called Dandelion to drink while we watched the sunset and then get dinner afterwards
  • What happened afterwards was the most hilarious and lucky walk we’ve ever done lol. In the total 20 minute speed walk from Hayes Valley to Dandelion, we hit every greenlight when crossing the street except for TWO times. The first few times we walked passed streets, we were just like “oh nice, another green light!” But after a while, we were DETERMINED to hit every green light, so when we were nearing one light that was red, Alec and Carina started taking the slowest steps possible so that the light would turn by the time they made it to the end of the street. I just about died laughing at the end, because there was a red light right a street before Mission Dolores Park, so we all made sloth steps until the light turned green, but then we became Sonic and sped through the yellow light that was about to turn red right before the park. It was so funny!
  • Finally made it to the park and found a place to sit down and wait for Archana to catch up. The sun actually set in the direction behind us, and there were a bunch of houses in the way, so we didn’t really see the sun set, but it was nice seeing all of the volleyball games and random person DJing at the park
  • We were getting hungry and cold sitting outside for so long, so we decided to get ramen nearby. I usually choose medium spice level and am disappointed by how not spicy it was, so I decided to go up a level and choose super spicy for my ramen. It actually was just the right amount of spicy for me! Now I know not to be so cautious and just get spicy or very spicy at most restaurants lol. Unless it’s Indian or Thai lol
  • After that, we were full and tired, so we got an Uber and went home to chill for the rest of the night

Friday, September 16th:

  • We woke up early (as per usual lol) and walked to Chinatown to get pastries at Good Mong Kok Bakery, which is known for their dim sum and pastries. Wasn’t expecting everything to be so large! But the menu wasn’t super helpful, so you kind of had to know what you wanted when you went to order or just pointed to what was available in front of you
  • Carina ordered this soccer ball looking thing, but we found out that it had pork in it, so we explored the bakery across the street, AA Bakery & Cafe, which had a display case of all of their items and name plates and was a lot easier to order. She ended up ordering three giant pastries lol
  • We walked to a park nearby to eat and took a lot of architectural and middle of the road pics lol
  • Decided to brave the steep slopes and walk to the Cable Car Museum, which was super hot inside because they didn’t have any A/C and had open doors to the public
  • After that, we walked back to Chinatown because we found out that there was a Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, which was a lot smaller than I thought but smelled great! They even gave everyone a sample of their fortune cookies to taste
  • Since we were hot and tired and needed to use the restroom, we stopped at By Me Boba Tea for drinks and to rest for a bit
  • We made plans with Archana to visit her for a tour of Salesforce Tower around lunch, so she told us to check out Spark Social to pick up lunch that we could eat at the Tower, so we killed time checking out all of the food trucks and resting because walking up and down those slopes all morning were no joke!
  • We eventually ordered lunch and took an Uber to the building and met up with Archana. She took us for a tour of the tower at the top floor. It was really fancy and full of plants, which was super cool. Archana brought her work laptop and needed to finish a report, so I hangout with her after we ate lunch while Alec and Carina explored the Salesforce Park since I was tired and didn’t want to be under the sun anymore
  • Afterwards, we went back to Archana’s place and rested while waiting for Suhas and Sarthak (Archana’s bf) to arrive since we had dinner plans at Rooh at 9. They brought a hilarious board game called Secret Hitler to play while we waited for our reservation, so we had a fun time learning how to bs our way to winning for our teams. I was a communist and Hitler for the last two games, and it was a lot harder than I thought trying to win the game lol
  • Finally went to Rooh for some fancy modern twist on Indian food. This was the first time Alec, Carina, and I DIDN’T order too much for dinner during the whole trip, so we were pleasantly surprised about that lol
  • We walked back to Archana’s place and chilled for a bit before Suhas went home and we got ready to go to bed
Saturday, September 17th:
  • Woke up early to walk to the Farmer’s Market! It was HUGE and had so much produce available! Too bad we were just looking for breakfast lol
  • Alec and I shared a Nepalese combo meal of chicken dumplings and goat with rice. The portion was huge for just one person! I also got a muffin to eat on the plane lol
  • After walking around one last time, we went back to Archana’s place to finish packing up and order an Uber to take us to the airport
  • We finally made it back to Alec’s house around 8pm. Curse the time difference lol
  • Carina drove home not long after we got back, and Alec and I ordered udon from Bonzu using Uber Eats because we were feeling something hot and brothy
  • We went to bed early and found out that Archana messaged us around 11pm that Sarthak tested positive for Covid and that she was feeling symptoms, too, so to be on the lookout
  • Spoiler alert: Alec and I got it a few days later lol. I’ll talk about our experience in another post. I think this one was long enough!

Other than that, SF was really fun! I just didn’t expect us to do SO MUCH sightseeing. Also, because I was about to start my period soon, I definitely got PSM towards the end and got irritated more often, especially when I was hot and in the sun. Need to remember to watch out for that next time we plan a trip around my period.

Webnovel Review: Run With the Ball in the Last Day by 萝卜精

Title: Run With the Ball in the Last Day
Author: 萝卜精
Chapters: 67 chapters
Publication: 2021
Summary from JJWXC:

Fangcheng lives very humble.

The last days are coming, Xu Yi is still the strongest king, but he is so ordinary, and finally died in the tide of zombies.

After rebirth, he wants to live well in troubled times. But I didn't expect that the supernatural power evolved by the body was actually to give birth to a child, and also picked up Xu Yi's cub?

Leaving quickly while no one noticed. He started farming, collecting supplies, and establishing storage stations.

When we met again, Xu Yi gave him a hand and pressed him against the wall: "Are you running?"

2.5 STARS - IT WAS OKAY

MY REVIEW:

I felt like the story wasn't fleshed out well because it started abruptly and ended pretty quickly. From the summary, you find out that Feng Cheng was reborn. He knew that he was a substitute for his boyfriend's white moonlight but still fell in love with him.

Since he was reborn, he decided to breakup with Xu Yi and focus on saving himself and his friends and family instead. You'd think with this type of set up, there would be some backstory on why they got together or how they fell for each other. It just seemed that Feng Cheng fell for Xu Yi one-sidedly while Xu Yi just kept him around him?? There's only a few chapters in total where they interact with each other. You don't understand why Feng Cheng loved him or was heartbroken because of him, so the relationship doesn't seem very real or even forced. Xu Yi doesn't even show up until near the end, so the romance is practically nonexistent.

Feng Cheng's whole pregnancy was almost nonexistent either. I expected more pregnancy content, but it was brushed off with a time skip. Once the baby was born, he had more existence in the book but not much other than to show Xu Yi what he was missing out on.

I was a bit disappointed that there was no extras. I wanted to see how the baby was doing in the future.
